Story: Finding the Boa

by Jim and Jeanne Henry

I brought home a boa constrictor from college for the summer.  It was in a tank in the basement.  It got loose and we could not find it.  We looked all over.  It was around the time of July 4 and so there were plenty of firecrackers going off around the town in Lake Lucerne.

One group of kids lit a firecracker and threw it in the culvert pipe by the house because they knew it made a crazy sound inside the pipe when it went off.  This time a big snake came out and hid in the ditch under some muck.  The Henry household was known to have crazy critters and were in the know on the strange things of the neighborhood, so it seemed normal to run and tell the Henrys about this huge snake.

Well, the only one home was Grandma.  Knowing that we were missing “Monty Boa” from the basement she came out, followed the kids to the ditch and reached in and grabbed the snake and brought it home.  People were amazed!  How did Grandma know that it was our docile pet snake and not some venomous wild snake?  She is a legend.
