Mom & Linda Visit Kim in Honduras-August 2010September 30, 2010 by Linda Henry

In August Mom and I flew to Honduras to visit Kim in the tiny impoverished village of El Cacao where she was working with the Las Sonrisa’s group.

Our adventure began when our plane arrived late at night in the city of La Ceiba and Kim was there to pick us up with a taxi. We stayed the first day in La Ceiba and visited where Kim had trained and walked with her all over the port city. Then we traveled by taxi the 30 or so miles to El Cacao and the little volunteer house where she was staying.

Kim’s days were spent working at the Las Sonrisa’s Project that is a day care, school and nutrition center for the children in the area. The project is run by a very dedicated couple, Patricia and Reid FitzSimons. One of my goals was to teach sewing to the girls there using a old yet very sturdy Singer that Mom and I brought from home. At first the girls were a little skeptical but became more and more interested as they saw that they could sew their own clothes and maybe sew items to sell such as curtains.

Our days were spent partly at the project and partly at the volunteer house where there is electricity to run the machine. We also hiked up a mountain to a beautiful creek with a series of pools and falls called Rio Maria that is very isolated and remote and magical. Kim had been lead there before by friends so she knew how to reach it otherwise it would be impossible to find.

We also took a ferry to a island called Roatan and stayed a couple days and enjoyed just being tourists. Roatan is a stop for large cruise ships but we traveled away from the main town and stayed in a little town called West End. We swam, kayaked and relaxed on the beach.

We were gone only about 10 days but got to see and do a lot and managed to fall in love with the country, the people but most of all the kids at Kim’s project. Kim herself came home in September but is already planning and plotting how to return. I also want to return with more sewing machines to extend what we started but after becoming sick with Dengue Fever that I contracted there I am not so sure. We’ll see.
