Sidney Rigdon.com is a collection of “rare and historic Mormon texts”. In this section they have excerpted many of the passages from Frederick Henry’s book, “Captain Henry of Geauga” that are pertaining to early Bainbridge life and Henry family history. Sidney Rigdon himself was reputed to have written the Book of Mormon while living in Bainbridge (see below links). Check out this link: http://sidneyrigdon.com/books/Hnry1942.htm
Published in 1880, this is the written memories of members of the Bainbridge community and some Henry family members and contains lots of interesting bits of Henry history in different sections. An example is this excerpt on p. 136:
“On the eighteenth of September, 1817, Simon Henry and family started from Washington, Berkshire county, Massachusetts, and arrived in what is now Bainbridge, on the first of November. The family consisted of himself, wife, and ten children — Orrin, William, John, Rhoda, Nelson, Ann, Mary, Calvin, Milo, and Newton.”
Pioneer Women of Geauga also makes several references to different Henry family members during the 1800’s and the settling of Bainbridge Township also makes several references to different Henry family members during the 1800’s and the settling of Bainbridge Township. Pioneer Women of Bainbridge.
I have made a PDF of the Bainbriged
Centerville Mills and the Old Chillicothe Road…Paper written by Frederick Henry (Mayfield, Ohio: 1962 — from 1946 MS)
This paper was written by Frederick Henry to preserve the history of the Centreville Mills area in Bainbridge. The portion regarding the connection to the beginnings of the Mormon religion (p.50) is really fascinating. There is an argument that the original Book of Mormon was written by Sidney Rigdon while living near the Henry homestead in Bainbridge. An example:
“Among the many Disciples of Christ, or “Campbellites,” on the Western Reserve, who were attracted for a season into the Mormon fold, Sidney Rigdon stood easily first. Ambitious, erratic, and eloquent, but not over-scrupulous, he became at once the brains of Mormondom. Grandfather John Henry maintained that he probably compiled the Book of Mormon while sojourning one winter (1825-1826) 1 in Bainbridge. In his quarters south of the Center, he seemed always to be writing, sometimes far into the night; and though he received courteously all who called, he would first lift the lid of his desk and lock his mysterious manuscript away therein before admitting them.”
UPDATE 2025- This link to the Henry Family Collection at Hiram College no longer works. Someone needs tomake a trip over to Hiram and discuss where these items are and how to link to them on our website.
Check out the well written Introduction page of the Henry Family Collection on the Hiram College website. I was privileged to visit the library there with Ellen a few years ago. We viewed some of these materials and some scans of photos were given to us to use on our family website.
