Tim Martin Memorial Hike - June 2009
From Chris:
Walk to the caves on May 3oth – Tim R Martin’s Bday. The first picture is the rock with his charcoal initials…. and of course Milo and Henry with awesome big speckled salamanders….
Matt This just in from Chris -June 16th – “Please send thoughts and prayers to Matt – Check out Cleveland.com about the house in Tremont that was totally destroyed by a gas leak explosion. It’s next door to his, and his house is so damaged as well that he can’t live in it. The Red Cross is putting all the folks up in a hotel for three nights and gave them food vouchers and next rent deposit money. So he has to find a new place to live, and lost most of his stuff, tho he didn’t have much of value. The woman next door was burned over 70% of her body and is in Metro.” Chris
Update from Chris:
“Brandon and I took today off (he works at my place) to help move the most valuable salvageable stuff out. We threw away the couch, tables, chairs, mattresses, pillows, lots of stuff. The whole place is just layers of broken glass, melted metal, black soot and wet ash, and everything is soaked and stinks. The house is boarded up and the electricity is turned off, so we worked with flashlights. The firemen took some of Matt’s family photos during the fire and put them in a protected cupboard – really nice. Sadly, the Alaska diary is soaked, but I’m trying to dry it out. I took all Matt’s and Mateo’s clothes home and am washing washing washing – I think most of it will be OK. He has offers of places in the neighborhood, and is considering everything. He’s at the hotel for two more nights, then he and Mateo will stay here for the weekend, then he’s hoping he’ll know where he’s going by the end of the weekend. My guess is that he’ll mostly need furniture, especially beds, when he does move. I told him I’m going to have a shower for him.
The neighborhood is having a fundraiser for everyone who was affected. Matt has told them he doesn’t want anything, that his share should go to the woman who was hurt (they say she might not make it). But he will take stuff from family! We’ll let people know when he’s ready.
Again, I can’t say enough about the Red Cross – they were on the scene immediately. They are providing three nights in a hotel, food vouchers, and $500 towards a new rent deposits for everyone affected.. ” Chris
