WAS A FRIEND OF GARFIELD
Served in Secret Service For Years; a Nationally Known Man.
The story of how Capt. C. E. Henry, a Nationally known Bain-bridge man, made a trip to Brazil for a criminal, and brought back two, the other an embezzler of bank funds in a Western State, ends with this issue.
The narrative was compiled from personal letters received at home, and from notes made in diaries on the trip.
Capt. Henry was employed in the U. S. Secret Service for some years previously, and made many trips after criminals to all parts of the U. S.
He was always sure to get his man, and recognized as one of the most successful operators in the service.
He was mild-mannered, far-seeing, always resourceful in an emergency, stern if need be, relentless and daring in his pursuit of criminals. The trip to Brazil was his longest. He was reticent about relating his experiences.
Capt. Henry and President Garfield were personal friends dating from their school days in Hiram. He was Marshal of the District of Columbia when Garfield was assassinated.
We are indebted to Judge Frederick A. Henry of Bainbridge, his son, for the story just concluded, and for the further courtesy of and old and finely executed photograph of his father, from which the above engraving was made.
