Story: Lost Fish Bay
1980s
There’s the story of old “Lost Fish Bay” when we were at Key Harbor – Diamond Key Lodge in Canada.
We had driven the boat all morning to explore a new area – primed for a new adventure. We weren’t used to catching large fish in this lake so we were looking for anything that might give us a fighting chance at “the big one”. My dad Rick was sitting in the middle of the boat with me in the back and my brother Justin in front. He casted out his brand new Musky Killer straight out as far as he could over a weed bed and instantly hooked into the biggest one we’d ever seen.
It came in slow without much of a fight and didn’t seem worried bout losing the battle. We were pumped up – Dad finally got the big pike! As it approached the boat we noticed it was hugging the bottom – at about 5 ft deep and impossible to net. The fish never stopped at that slow and steady speed, it just kept going past the boat like a train. Dad pushed his rod tip down into the water and leaned over as the fish pulled and pulled his rod under the boat. Just before getting pulled overboard the line snapped! And all went quiet as our stomachs dropped Not happy…
The next day, we of course went way out and back up the river to the exact same bay. We had Tim in the boat with us this time instead of Justin. Soon after stopping, Tim hooked into a huge largemouth bass – the fish smashed the lure and jumped at least twice before his line snapped off. Tim was already devastated but to make matters worse over the next several hours the fish surfaced once every 10-15 minutes trying to shake free of the big spinnerbait hooked to it’s lip. We actually chased the fish around the bay in the boat with the net hoping to net it when it surfaced. Of course we never did – otherwise would not be called Lost Fish Bay…
