Limericks: Holly & Jerry Wedding Limericks

by Cory Henry Billiar

Hello Family and Friends of Holly and Jerry! As you all know, our lovely bride and groom are getting married this Thursday, New Year’s Eve, in Galway, Ireland. It’s so exciting to have Mom, Dad, and five of Holly’s friends here. That being said, dear friends and family such as you will be missed. To include you, we thought it would be fun if you could send a toast, congratulations, or if you’re feeling really creative (which we’re banking that you are!), write a Limerick or Irish Blessing. Please send to my email.

Mom, Dad, Kris, Mary Pat and I are all sitting around the table and this is what we came up with: There once was a couple from Cleve-LAND Their relationship was strong and grand They got engaged in the Heights But to avoid big fights Said what the ‘feck’, let’s get married in Eire-LAND. *(‘feck’ is a widely used slang word used here in Ireland)

Quick Holly Facts: love to travel the world, music, family, biking, camping, party, dance, has worked at the VA for 20 years (and now is the Boss!) Quick Jerry Facts: loves to run, sail, bike, hike, camp, loves his dogs, grew up on Put-in-Bay

Helpful hints to write limericks: The racier, the better. Limericks are notoriously bawdy and obnoxious. The last line should deliver a punch, be it surprising, funny or naughty. 5 lines. Note that the first, second and fifth lines each have eight syllables, and rhyme with each other, while the middle lines have only six syllables and a separate rhyme.

Other (more bawdy!) examples: There once was a bride of such beauty That her groom stood by her quite crudely She soon began to despair ‘Cause he’d never compare And she sent him off without booty

Or, here’s an example of an Irish Blessing: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields.

or, a bit more silly…………. May your union be blessed with more love than your hearts can hold … may you still stand to look at one another after you’ve grown wrinkled and old. May the sun shine warm upon your face … but not after you’d had too much to drink! May you know nothing but happiness from this day forward … or at least until the honey moon is over!

I know this is a super busy time for everyone, but Holly and Jerry would LOVE to hear from you. I plan on printing what you write and reading/giving them to HOlly and Jerry at their wedding. Please send by Tuesday night, 12/29–if possible! Thank you/Go raibh mile maith agat xxCori&Kris

I hope we can get some photos of Holly and Jerry’s wedding on New Years Eve in Ireland to add to the Howler but in the meantime, here are the e-mails regarding the special Wedding Limericks.

This note from Cori & Kris on 12-29-09 just two days before the big day: a gentle Irish reminder……Linda

No panic about being brilliant or a grand writer–any well wish, blessing (or Limerick of course!) will do. Thanks, millions! Tomorrow is fine, too. a few more examples……………… An Irish blessing for Holly and Jerry, May you always get each other’s back May you each never Botox your face, and may the Browns and Indians win on their fields. or Now Holly and Jerry are clever And like to take on an endeavor So they took off again To bring in 20-10 By joining together forever! Off to Ireland this young couple flew Friends and family – there were a few Their commitments they swore Then found parties galore Happy wedding and New Year you two! previous email………

This note on 01-05-10 from Cori naughtiest limerick prize……… goes to Dan and Crew in Alaska–Congrats! You made us all laugh here in Galway!

We’re pleased to report that Holly and Jerry had a lovely honeymoon here on Emerald Isle and will fly back to Cleveland tomorrow (as will my dad–Mom stays till Monday). My parents, girls, Kris and I survived a 4 day trip to Kilarney, Blarney and Ring of Kerry during record cold temperatures here in Ireland. But, no one is complaining–the sun was out with gorgeous sites all around and you still can’t beat an Irish Coffee on a cold day. My parents get first prize for surviving the far back seat, going 40KM/hour on Irish roads (barely no highways), trying to keep peace among Lucy and Simone. And, Kris will now have a lifetime full of the gift of gab (didn’t he already?!) from kissing the Blarney Stone (just cause you told him too, Heidi!). Finally, I am excited to gain a brother-in-law, but am officially hanging up my wedding planner hat for a long, long time;)

Happy New Year to All! Come visit!

xxCori

Here is Dan’s winning Limerick:

Jerry was randy for Holly. Knew life without her would be folly. For her hand he did beg, Seeing his mighty third leg, She said YES! And knew life would be jolly.
