Story: Kamikaze Crow 1982

Another time, Uncle Gene and I were in a canoe, duck hunting down the Cuyahoga from Daniels park…

Quietly drifting down, freezing our butts of, with light snow on both sides of us…

We were being whisper-quiet and it was relatively boring cuz we had seen very few signs of life…

I couldn’t quite understand why he wanted to get up at 5:30 AM just to freeze to death!

Then way up above us, probably over 100 yards, flying from right to left was a lone crow, cawing as it passed.

Uncle Gene was behind me and I whispered over my shoulder that I thought I could bring that crow down with one shot.

He chuckled and said “Í’ve got $5 that says he won’t”.

I aimed and shot my 12 GA. and must have barely winged it because a few feathers popped out and the bird started falling, in huge 8 – 10 foot diameter circles with one wing out and the other wing half closed. It was like in slow motion…

Around and around and around, coming right down towards us like a Kamikaze crow! Gene yelled out, “The God Damn thing is gonna hit me” and a second later it landed 6” off the edge of the canoe right next to him and it totally soaked him from the splash.

“Damdest thing I ever saw” he would say every time we reminisced…
