Story: The Float Plane

Told by Jeanne Henry and written by Brian Lee

Another Canada Fishing Story

It was summertime and Janet and Fred along with Gene and I were on a fishing trip.  The accommodations featured a lodge and several cabins, one of which the four of us rented.  Very basic conditions.

The night before we left for home, Gene and I took the boat for one last pickerel attempt.  It was dark and cold and about when we were thinking about going back we noticed a small plane circling lower and lower.

It appeared to be aiming for us.  We doused the light so the pilot wouldn’t think the light was a landing field, but he came in anyway and crashed into the lake not far from us.

We motored  over to the half sunk plane with the pilot hanging on to the wing, though nearly unconscious.  We got him into the boat and wrapped him with our coats.

After gathering anything floating which might be important we motored to the lodge where a warm fire was going.

He was coming in and out of consciousness and we were able to find out that he was lost and ran out of gas.  The lodge people took it from there.

When we got back to the cabin we had a good excuse for no fish and a great story to tell.  And Janet and Fred had a lovely evening together.

Epilogue:

We did get a very appreciative letter from the pilot and an invitation for a ride in his new plane the next time we were in Canada. Gene did visit him the next time he went up and he says he didn’t take him up on the flight invite. Oh Well !! Also, Robyn Henry’s birthday is April 26. Nine months after our pickerel outing 🙂
